LiftMaster goes back in time to unveil Kasey Kahne throwback

LiftMaster has unveiled Terry Labonte 1982 JD Stacy Buick paint scheme as the throwback for Hendrick Motorsports driver Kasey Kahne’s No. 5 LiftMaster Chevrolet SS during the Darlington NASCAR Throwback weekend.

Through an interactive, virtual reality experience at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, LiftMaster, Kahne and 2016 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee, Terry Labonte, revealed Labonte’s 1982 JD Stacy Buick paint scheme as the inspiration for Kahne’s LiftMaster design for the Labor Day weekend race. This time frame also has significant meaning for LiftMaster who were entering the garage door opener business in the United States.

“The Darlington throwback weekend is a great trip down memory lane for LiftMaster, and to celebrate our founding year with Kasey Kahne and a champion like Terry Labonte is really something special,” said LiftMaster Vice President of Marketing, John Villanueva. “To use interactive technology to introduce this paint scheme aligns perfectly with the LiftMaster brand because innovation and technology are at the core of our business.”

Labonte, a two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion, captured 22 wins in NASCAR’s top series with his final victory coming in the No. 5 car with Hendrick Motorsports at Darlington Raceway in 2003.

“This paint scheme brings back a lot of really great memories for me, and I’m honored that LiftMaster put together this program with Kasey and the No. 5 team for Darlington,” said Labonte. “To experience the unveiling through virtual reality is something I would have never thought was possible in 1982, so to see just how far technology has come and how LiftMaster integrates it into its products was really neat.”

“Darlington’s throwback paint schemes is one of the coolest programs any track does all year,” said Kahne. “I’m glad that LiftMaster is participating in the program to celebrate their first year of the garage door opener business. It’s neat that we are able to honor Terry Labonte with our throwback scheme at one of my favorite tracks.”
To bring the unveiling to life with the latest technology, LiftMaster partnered with Next/Now and invited guests to use HTV Vive virtual reality technology to “go back in time” and experience life in 1982. Guests were able to see the car as it ran in 1982 and now as a 2016 tribute car by taking a virtual walk around the team’s garage.

“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with LiftMaster to take guests beyond the car and give them a totally immersive virtual reality experience using HTC Vive virtual reality technology,” said Randy Gress, Next/Now Director of Business Development. “We use a stereoscopic 3-D rendering, a high-resolution display, and a 110-degree wide view to set up the unveil, and the result is something for which we’re truly proud.”
The Bojangles’ Southern 500 will air on NBC at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 4, 2016.
